We perform and promote research into living with spinal cord injury Donations and commitments from philanthropists, large and small, and companies have provided us with funding to appoint a Research Director and launch a medium term programme of research. In March 2012 the Foundation’s trustees appointed Dr. Joost van Middendorp as its first Research Director.  Dr. Van Middendorp is both a qualified MD and holds a PhD in spinal research.  The Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust (BHT) has provided the Foundation with use of facilities in a modern building close to the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) at Stoke Mandeville. The Foundations’s research activites will seek to: facilitate high quality spinal cord injury research work; improve the translation of research into treatment and support for people with spinal cord injury; and promote, directly or indirectly, additional research projects which meet its aims and standards. Life expectancy for spinal injuries has increased significantly to that approaching the national average. It is the quality of this life that the Foundation hopes to improve. There is much work still to do in relation to many aspects of acute care, rehabilitation, complications and independent living and quality of life.
